Who Listens To This Shit, Pick of the Week: Death in December

Alright, now I’m not one to be a complete fuckin’ prick, especially when it comes to music but some things I just can’t handle. This is my first Who Listens To This Shit, Pick of the Week, and I randomly came across this band on myspace and decided this guy definitely has to be on this list with his band Death in December. Keep in mind, I’m a musician so I’m not completely talking out of my ass.

Anyways bear in mind that this is just my opinions on bands and the music scene. Just a friendly rant on bands and not meant to hurt anyones poor feelings. Now that being said….

The reason why I picked this band is because they represent so many others. They ALL sound the same. I used to listen to this type of music, 7 years ago. It’s all sooo boring and all the same. Just listen to the first song on their MySpace. Cuts in with the catchy double mute to the wonderful high pitch metal chord (you know… to show how extreme they are). Not to mention they have the “emo-core” down to a tee. Wonderful smooth vocals with intense screaming to accompany.

Now like I said, I’m not trying to center them out, I’ve seen hundreds of bands that are all the same, especially on warped tour. But that is my point, what ever happened to originality? Everything is about the double kick and drop C tuning these days. Whinny vocals and “so sad” lyrics. Possibly it’s that I’m getting older, I’m only 23, but this scene is dead my friends. Possibly it’s due to the fact that everybody in a band has a Pro Tools unit in their basement and think they are a rock stars because they can make a half decently sounding CD (Sonically anyways). Can’t sing? Throw on Antares Auto-Tune and away we go. Don’t know how to record, watch this instructional DVD on how to. It’s awesome that everyone can record but it also means that not so talented people have the power to start a band.

Now, back to Death in December. These guys aren’t that bad of musicians it’s just all been done before. The hair, the make-up, the tattoos…. yawn. The reason I’m saying all this is, the ONLY way you will survive as a musician is if you bring an element of difference to the table. That doesn’t mean you have to change the style of your music all together. You like heavy music, play heavy music… just do something different from everyone else. Don’t listen to your favorite band and be like, I want to be them… cause it’s been done. Sure people will like it and buy it, but you won’t last.

Now I know what you are all thinking as you are reading this… “who the hell is this guy think he is”… or “if you have the formula for success why don’t you go out and do it”… again it’s just my opinion. As Ron Burgandy would say “Agree to disagree” if you don’t like my opinion. But you can’t tell me that this picture of Ryan Oliveira isn’t hilarious. Plus I wrote the lyrics to possibly his next big smash hit.

So check out their MySpace. Also check out Ryan’s side project We Are the Party (I do like the name)… maybe it’ll be your favorite new band. Or maybe like me, you’ll want to buy a CD just so you can burn it.
